As in the previous games, sex scenes will play a role in the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. They will not only be used to titillate, however, but will be woven into the story, according to writer Jakub Szamalek. “It’s not just because: it serves as a tool to tell a story between characters and give another dimension to the relationship we are portraying” he explaines.
Level designer Miles Tost says that CD Projekt RED is making a “mature game, for a mature audience”, adding that sex scenes in the game are a reflection of “adult life”. Their purpose in the narrative is to give additional layers to the game’s characters. Tost added that they should not be used as a selling point for the game: “As long as you remain tactful in what you do, as long as you have a legitimate reason to put sex in your game, I think it’s quite safe to do so.”
After the commotion surrounding the sex cards in the first game, CD Projekt RED decided to make the sex in the game realistic. Game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz says: “We don’t want to make fakes, we want to show stuff like it is in real life. The most important for us is to achieve the huge immersion of the player in the game.”. According to Tomaszkiewicz, it is very important to maintain player immersion during the sex scenes.
In order to make the erotic scenes as realistic as possible, CD Projekt RED put a great deal of effort – even recording 16 hours of motion capture material just for the scenes of sex.
Even though the game’s developers are treating the subject seriously, many people probably will not – like Conan O’Brien:
